How to set up a proxy in programs

A proxy server acts as an intermediary between your device and the website you want to reach. The destination sees the proxy IP instead of yours, and your apparent location changes accordingly. For managing multiple accounts, accessing region-locked services, or keeping work sessions separated by IP, a proxy on a mobile device is a basic requirement. But iOS handles proxy configuration with a few limitations that are easy to miss, and skipping them leads to IP leaks, broken sessions, and flagged accounts. This guide covers both the built-in method and third-party apps, with the trade-offs between them.

What iOS can and cannot do with proxies

The built-in proxy configuration on iOS only covers Wi-Fi connections and supports HTTP/HTTPS protocols. There is no native SOCKS5 support, and no proxy field exists for cellular data. As AIMultiple notes, cellular connections are governed by APN settings controlled by the carrier, and Apple does not expose a proxy option there. When the device switches from Wi-Fi to LTE or 5G automatically, traffic bypasses the proxy entirely.

Which proxy types does Telegram support?

Telegram’s official proxy documentation lists two supported types, SOCKS5 and MTProto, and notes that some clients also accept HTTP. A SOCKS5 entry needs a server and a port, with an optional login and password. An MTProto entry always needs a server, a port and a secret. The secret tells you which mode you were given: Telegram’s own MTProxy repository documents the dd prefix for random padding, added because some ISPs identify MTProxy by packet size, while an ee prefix marks the later Fake TLS mode. Both types are added on the same screen, so the steps below apply to either.

Android gives you two routes for sending traffic through a proxy: the Wi-Fi settings built into the system, and a dedicated app. The built-in route fails for most commercial proxies for one documented reason. Google’s ProxyInfo API reference defines a proxy configuration as a host, a port and an exclusion list, or a PAC file URL. There is no field for a username or a password, and no field for SOCKS. A proxy set on Android does not reach every app, and this is documented behaviour rather than a fault in your setup. The ProxyInfo reference on developer.android.com explains that proxy settings are already wired into the java.net and Apache HTTP stacks, so URLConnection and HttpClient pick them up automatically. Everything else is on its own: “Other HTTP stacks will need to obtain the proxy info from PROXY_CHANGE_ACTION broadcast”, states the same page. Apps built on Cronet, on native NDK code or on Flutter’s dart:io must subscribe to that broadcast themselves, and many never do. Their traffic leaves the device unproxied.

Running a second Telegram account from the same phone is where most people first hit a proxy requirement, because messengers, marketplaces and ad platforms all treat the IP address as an identity signal. The phone is now where those checks land: DataReportal's Digital 2026 mid-year figures put 96.2% of internet users online from a mobile phone at least part of the time, against 7.64 billion smartphones in active use. How to connect proxy on your phone

Windows 10 version and support status

Windows 10 still runs 26.36% of desktop Windows machines worldwide, according to StatCounter figures for May 2026, against 71.69% for Windows 11. Regional shares differ sharply. In the Russian Federation Windows 10 holds 46.44% and Windows 11 holds 50.83%, so almost half of desktop machines there still run the older release. Confirm your build before changing any network setting, because 21H2 and 22H2 behave differently under Extended Security Updates. Windows 10 left mainstream support on 14 October 2025, and Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates page now states the consumer program runs until 12 October 2027, limited to 22H2 in Home, Pro, Pro Education and Workstations editions.
