How to Use a Proxy

The word residential on a price page is not the same thing as a residential address on the wire. GreyNoise Intelligence validated a sample of exit IPs from a four-billion-session dataset against Censys ground truth and found 42% were genuinely residential endpoints, rising to 62% once compromised home equipment was counted. The remaining 38% were misclassified servers or scanners. IP-type classification itself is unreliable, which is the practical reason premium exists: a pool where the label, the ASN and the actual endpoint agree, and where somebody can prove it.

What are premium residential proxies

Premium residential proxies are IP addresses that belong to real users and are physically bound. The mechanism of operation does not differ from other types of proxies: the user sends a request, the proxy server changes it to its own and transmits it to the site on its own behalf, hiding the IP and geolocation of the user.

What is a proxy address?

A proxy address is the network location your device connects to before its traffic reaches a website. It is written as a host and a port joined by a colon, either an IP address such as 203.0.113.45:8080 or a hostname such as gate.example.com:3128. The host tells your software which machine to reach. The port tells it which service on that machine handles proxy requests. Enter that proxy address into a browser, an operating system or a script, and the destination site records the proxy IP rather than yours. The number on its own reveals nothing about the protocol, the country or the address type.

Is a proxy address the same as proxyAddresses in Microsoft 365?

No, and this is the most common mix-up on the topic. In Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID, proxyAddresses is a multi-value directory attribute that stores a mailbox’s email aliases, which can be SMTP, X500 or SIP entries written with prefixes such as SMTP: for the primary address. Microsoft defines it as the address by which an Exchange recipient object is recognised in a foreign mail system, and describes how Entra ID recalculates those values during synchronisation. It has no port. It performs no routing, and you cannot type it into a browser.

Automated software now generates more web traffic than people do. The 2026 Bad Bot Report from Thales and Imperva puts automated requests at 53% of all web traffic during 2025, up from 51% a year earlier, with bad bots alone accounting for 40%. That shift is why site operators no longer treat an unfamiliar IP address as neutral. Residential proxies route requests through addresses assigned by consumer internet service providers such as Comcast, Deutsche Telekom or BT, so traffic arrives from a range associated with home subscribers rather than from a hosting facility.

A residential proxy is an intermediary server that forwards your request through a device on a consumer ISP connection and returns the response to you. The destination records the proxy's address and its geographic location instead of yours. Typical applications include price and availability monitoring on retail sites, search result tracking across regions, advertising verification, brand protection checks and quality assurance on geo-targeted content. A residential proxy does not change what a website permits. It changes which network the request comes from, and the site's own terms of service still govern what you may collect.

The choice between a static residential proxy and a rotating residential proxy resolves to one number: how much traffic a single identity consumes per month. In the 2026 Proxy Market Research from Proxyway, an independent proxy testing lab, the median rotating residential rate on a 50 GB plan is $3.00 per gigabyte, while a dedicated static IP costs around $3.20 per month. Below roughly one gigabyte per identity per month, static is cheaper. Above it, rotation is. Detection risk, session length and geo coverage adjust that baseline rather than reverse it.

ISP (static) proxies use fixed IPs registered to consumer internet service providers but hosted on server hardware, while rotating residential proxies borrow addresses from real consumer devices. That structural difference drives everything downstream: how long a session survives, how the address is classified by IP databases, and how the provider bills you. One is sold per IP per month, the other per gigabyte. Comparing them on headline price alone is misleading until both are converted to the same unit: cost per identity, or cost per successful request.

Purpose of Wi-Fi Proxy

A proxy in Wi-Fi is a server address you enter in the settings of one specific wireless network, so the device sends its web requests to that server instead of straight to the site. The setting belongs to the network profile rather than to the device: join another SSID and it no longer applies, and mobile data is configured separately. Android and iOS both keep it in the details of the connected network, with a manual mode and an automatic mode that loads a PAC file. That is the whole mechanism, a redirection rule for one network rather than a system-wide tunnel.

What reaches the proxy depends on the protocol. Plain HTTP requests are forwarded by it and can be read or modified. HTTPS requests begin with a CONNECT command naming the destination host, after which the proxy relays an encrypted tunnel whose contents it cannot see. Anything that is not HTTP, including QUIC and HTTP/3 over UDP, VoIP and most game traffic, ignores the setting completely. Cloudflare reports that roughly 95% of requests to its network already arrive over HTTPS, so hostnames rather than page contents are what a Wi-Fi proxy normally handles.

IPv4 defines 4,294,967,296 possible addresses, and 3.687 billion of them had been allocated by the end of 2025. The pool has stopped growing. Geoff Huston’s annual address report on the ARIN blog recorded a contraction of roughly 237,000 addresses across 2025, about 0.01 percent of the total. Every hosting account, mobile subscriber and proxy server now draws on that fixed supply, which is why a single IPv4 address carries a market price, an inherited reputation history and, in the RIPE region, a waiting list.
