Why YouTube shows "VPN/proxy detected" and how websites recognize proxies

proxy detected"VPN/proxy detected" on YouTube means YouTube has classified your connection's IP address as a VPN, proxy, hosting network or privacy relay, and the video or channel you opened won't play over it. The screen says "To continue, turn off your VPN/proxy." If you don't use a VPN, the cause is hidden routing on your device or an ISP address that databases mislabel.

Key points

  • Any VPN or proxy blocks playback on YouTube TV, Primetime channels and restricted channels, by rule.
  • On regular YouTube, only channels that chose to restrict playback show the error.
  • Detection is a score built from IP databases, ASN, shared IPs and browser or network mismatches.
  • Without a VPN, the cause is hidden routing or a misclassified ISP address.
  • Check in this order: direct connection, hidden routing, IP classification, location settings, then clear the cache.

What the VPN/proxy detected message means

The message means YouTube matched your IP address to a VPN, proxy, hosting or privacy-relay category, and the content you opened restricts that traffic. It isn't an account ban, and a VPN or proxy detected result doesn't mean YouTube knows your real IP.

YouTube TV, Primetime channels and restricted channels

On YouTube TV, Primetime channels and restricted channels, any VPN or proxy blocks playback, and turning it off is the only fix. Google's YouTube TV help says you can't stream these services while connected to a VPN or proxy. It's a policy, not a test of IP quality, so it covers paid VPNs and every proxy type.

People without a VPN hit it too. In an EE Community thread, a UK viewer on EE pay-as-you-go mobile broadband got the error on Bundesliga, La Liga and Formula 1 highlights, while Ligue 1 and Sky Sports played and everything worked on public Wi-Fi. Those channels restrict VPN traffic, and the EE address was classified as proxy or hosting.

Why YouTube restricts VPN and proxy traffic

YouTube restricts VPN and proxy traffic for licensing, regional pricing and bot protection, and each reason has its own fix.

Licensing and home area rules

Local TV rights are sold by market, so YouTube TV builds your lineup from your home ZIP code and checks that you're there. The home area can change twice in 12 months, only from inside the new area, and travelers should watch at home at least every 3 months. When location is unclear, tv.youtube.com/verify asks for the device's location, and a VPN that moves only the IP makes the phone's GPS and the TV's IP disagree.

Regional pricing and billing country checks

YouTube Premium is priced by country, and members whose signup country doesn't match where they watch are asked to update billing. In June 2024 a spokesperson told TechCrunch that YouTube has "systems in place to determine the country of our users." Buying Premium at another country's price breaks Google's rule to represent your country accurately; proxys.io doesn't recommend it.

Bot checks and automated traffic

"Sign in to confirm you're not a bot" is a separate automated-traffic check, most common on cloud ranges such as AWS, Azure and CI runners. Imperva's 2026 Bad Bot Report found that bots made up over 53% of all web traffic, with 40% classified as malicious, and the YouTube Terms of Service ban automated access without permission. For data, use the YouTube Data API v3: a project gets 100 search.list calls and 10,000 units per day for other methods by default.

How websites detect VPNs and proxies

Websites detect VPNs and proxies by scoring signals from the IP, the network, the browser and behavior against their own threshold, so one IP passes on one site and gets a proxy or VPN detected screen on another. Google doesn't disclose YouTube's methods; what follows is standard anti-fraud and CDN practice.

IP reputation databases and ASN checks

Most detection starts with an IP reputation database. IP2Proxy, MaxMind, IPQualityScore and IPinfo build VPN, proxy, Tor and hosting labels from ASN and WHOIS records, hosting ranges, open-proxy scans and VPN exit lists. An address from AWS (AS16509), DigitalOcean (AS14061) or Hetzner (AS24940) reads as a server at once.

"Residential means invisible" is a myth: IP2Proxy and MaxMind both flag residential proxies, while mobile IPs behind CGNAT more often carry the carrier's label. For the trade-offs between the two, see how mobile and residential proxies differ.

Databases lag: new VPN servers stay unlabeled for a while, and reassigned blocks keep stale labels. Reputation also reflects abuse history; see how IP reputation is scored and improved. Check your IP in two or three databases. If all say hosting or proxy, you've found the cause.

Shared IPs and traffic patterns

Many users on one IP at once is a classic VPN signal, and it catches carriers too. Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) puts many subscribers behind one public IPv4 address (100.64.0.0/10 internally, RFC 6598), so a mobile broadband IP looks like a busy shared one. Sites also watch request rates and country changes within a session. For business work: one session, one IP.

DNS, WebRTC, timezone and location mismatches

Sites compare your IP's location with what the network and browser report; each mismatch adds to the score.

Timezone and language prove little alone, so sites weigh them as part of browser fingerprinting.

WebRTC deserves a privacy check, because WebRTC can expose your real IP to any page when media traffic skips the proxy.

TLS and TCP/IP fingerprints

TLS and TCP/IP fingerprints reveal the software and OS behind a connection; a mismatch with the User-Agent points to a relay. JA3 (2017) and JA4 (FoxIO, 2023) fingerprint the TLS ClientHello, so a "Chrome" request with a Python library's fingerprint looks scripted. Default TTL is 64 on Linux, macOS and Android and 128 on Windows, and tunnels lower the MTU (1420 bytes by default in WireGuard). Transparent proxies add Via, X-Forwarded-For or Forwarded headers (RFC 7239); labels like "elite" describe headers, not invisibility. Whether YouTube uses these methods is not public.

Why the error appears when you don't use a VPN

Without a VPN, either traffic still runs through a relay you don't see as a VPN, or your ISP's address is misclassified. That answers most searches for what does VPN proxy detected mean.

Hidden routing on your device or network

Hidden routing is anything that relays traffic without looking like a VPN app:

  • browser VPNs in Opera, Edge and Firefox;
  • proxy extensions and iCloud Private Relay;
  • security suites with a VPN module (check its status and keep protection on);
  • corporate gateways such as Zscaler, router-level VPNs and parental-control apps.

System proxy settings sit in Settings > Network & internet > Proxy on Windows, scutil --proxy on macOS, Wi-Fi > (i) > Configure Proxy on iOS and the Wi-Fi network's Advanced > Proxy on Android. Our guide shows how to turn off a proxy on each.

ISP addresses flagged as proxy

An ISP address is flagged when a database labels its whole range as VPN, proxy or hosting, as in the EE case. CGNAT carriers and IPv4 blocks bought from hosting companies are the most exposed, and databases can also put an IP in the wrong city or country. Compare on another network, check the IP's classification, and send your ISP the IP, the time and a screenshot. MaxMind reviews one-off corrections within 1 to 2 business days, but the block lifts only when the blocking service loads the new data.

How to fix VPN/proxy detected on YouTube

Turn off any VPN or proxy first; if you use none, find whether the device, the network or the IP label is the cause. This order fits a YouTube VPN proxy detected screen on any device:

  1. Identify where the error appears. On YouTube TV, Primetime or restricted channels, turning the VPN or proxy off is the only fix.
  2. Disconnect fully, including the kill switch and any VPN profile in iOS or Android settings, then reload the video.
  3. Try a phone hotspot. If the video plays, the home IP is the cause (ISP addresses flagged as proxy).
  4. Look for hidden routing on your device or network.
  5. Check how two or three databases classify your public IP.
  6. For Premium, check the account country and billing details.
  7. Clear cache and cookies last, so earlier tests stay comparable.
  8. Send your ISP or YouTube support the IP, the time and screenshots.

Extra steps for YouTube TV

On YouTube TV, also make the device and the account agree on location, because a YouTube TV VPN proxy detected error can outlast the VPN. Check Profile > Location (Home area and Current playback area), open tv.youtube.com/verify on your phone with location allowed, and check Chrome's Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Location. Managed work or school Chromebooks may lock these settings, and home area changes are limited to two per 12 months.

Legitimate proxy use cases for YouTube work

Legitimate proxy work on YouTube means seeing what viewers in another region see, without signing in as them: regional ad verification, geo-availability QA of your own videos, localization testing and brand safety checks. Use a dedicated browser profile, no personal accounts, one IP per session and the API for data, within YouTube's Terms of Service. Never use proxies for YouTube TV, Premium pricing or watching outside licensed regions. Residential and mobile IPs should come from device owners who gave consent.

Run each address through the proxys.io proxy checker before you attach it to a work profile, not after the first error.

FAQ

Why does YouTube say VPN/proxy detected if I don't use a VPN?

Usually hidden routing (a browser VPN, an extension, iCloud Private Relay) or an ISP range flagged as proxy. Play the same video on another network to tell which.

How does YouTube know I'm using a proxy?

Google doesn't disclose its methods. Standard detection combines IP reputation databases, ASN, shared-IP patterns and WebRTC or timezone mismatches..

Does YouTube block all VPNs?

No. The block covers YouTube TV, Primetime channels and channels that restrict playback; datacenter IPs may also get a separate bot check.

Why does YouTube TV keep detecting my VPN?

It's a policy, and YouTube TV also checks the device's GPS or Wi-Fi location, so a changed IP creates mismatched regions. Disable the VPN or proxy.
